At the end of May, the Oxford Union held a debate on the motion “This house believes Britain owes reparations to her former colonies”. Speakers included former Conservative MP Sir Richard Ottaway, Indian politician and writer @ShashiTharoor and British historian John Mackenzie. Shashi Tharoor’s argument in support of the motion, went viral in India after he tweeted it out from his personal account. But Mr Tharoor is jumping on the wagon a bit late. British archives show hat nearly 20 million Indians died of famine between 1800 and 1900. Those who were supposed to bring education and prosperity, actually broke down’s India’ back. For even after the Muslim invasions, India was still land of plenty, where Chinese and Portuguese travelers of the 17th century, marveled that no beggars could be seen.
