Is there such a thing as ‘Hindu terrorism’, as Home Minister Shinde is heavily hinting at? Well, I am one of that rare breed of foreign correspondents — a lover of Hindus! A born Frenchman, Catholic-educated and non-Hindu, I do hope I’ll be given some credit for my opinions, which are not the product of my parents’ ideas, my education or my atavism, but garnered from 25 years of reporting in South Asia (for Le Journal de Geneve and Le Figaro).
In the early 1980s, when I started freelancing in south India, doing photo features on Kalaripayattu, the Ayyappa festival, or the Ayyanars, I slowly realised that the genius of this country lies in its Hindu ethos, in the true spirituality behind Hinduism. The average Hindu you meet in a million villages possesses this simple, innate spirituality and accepts your diversity, whether you are Christian or Muslim, Jain or Arab, French or Chinese. It is this Hinduness that makes the Indian Christian different from, say, a French Christian, or the Indian Muslim unlike a Saudi Muslim. I also learnt that Hindus not only believed that the divine could manifest itself at different times, under different names, using different scriptures (not to mention the wonderful avatar concept, the perfect answer to 21st century religious strife) but that they had also given refuge to persecuted minorities from across the world—Syrian Christians, Parsis, Jews, Armenians, and today, Tibetans.
In 3,500 years of existence, Hindus have never militarily invaded another country, never tried to impose their religion on others by force or induced conversions. You cannot find anybody less fundamentalist than a Hindu in the world and it saddens me when I see the Indian and western press equating terrorist groups like SIMI, which blow up innocent civilians, with ordinary, angry Hindus who burn churches without killing anybody. We know also that most of these communal incidents often involve persons from the same groups—often Dalits and tribals—some of who have converted to Christianity and others not. However reprehensible the destruction of Babri Masjid, no Muslim was killed in the process; compare this to the ‘vengeance’ bombings of 1993 in Bombay, which wiped out hundreds of innocents, mostly Hindus. Yet the Babri Masjid destruction is often described by journalists as the more horrible act of the two. We also remember how Sharad Pawar, when he was chief minister of Maharashtra in 1993, lied about a bomb that was supposed to have gone off in a Muslim locality of Bombay.
I have never been politically correct, but have always written what I have discovered while reporting. Let me then be straightforward about this so-called Hindu terror. Hindus, since the first Arab invasions, have been at the receiving end of terrorism, whether it was by Timur, who killed 1,00,000 Hindus in a single day in 1399, or by the Portuguese Inquisition which crucified Brahmins in Goa. Today, Hindus are still being targeted: there were one million Hindus in the Kashmir valley in 1900; only a few hundred remain, the rest having fled in terror. Blasts after blasts have killed hundreds of innocent Hindus all over India in the last four years. Hindus, the overwhelming majority community of this country, are being made fun of, are despised, are deprived of the most basic facilities for one of their most sacred pilgrimages in Amarnath while their government heavily sponsors the Haj.. They see their brothers and sisters converted to Christianity through inducements and financial traps, see a harmless 84-year-old swami and a sadhvi brutally murdered. Their gods are blasphemed. So sometimes, enough is enough.
At some point, after years or even centuries of submitting like sheep to slaughter, Hindus—whom the Mahatma once gently called cowards—erupt in uncontrolled fury. And it hurts badly. It happened in Gujarat. It happened in Jammu, then in Kandhamal, Mangalore, Malegaon, or Ajmer. It may happen again elsewhere. What should be understood is that this is a spontaneous revolution on the ground, by ordinary Hindus, without any planning from the political leadership.
Therefore, the BJP, instead of fighting over each other as to whom should be the next party president, or who will be their PM candidate for the 2014 elections, should do well to put its house together. For it’s evident that the Congress has decided on this absurd strategy of the absurd, the untrue, the unjust, the treacherous, only to target Mr Narendra Modi, their enemy number One.
It should also fight the Untrue with Truth: there are about a billion Hindus, one in every six persons on this planet. They form one of the most successful, law-abiding and integrated communities in the world today. Can you call them terrorists? Let the BJP compile a statistics of how many Hindus were killed by Muslims since 1947 and how many Muslims by Hindus. These statistics will speak by themselves

Great article, as always, but as a minor (or even tangential) point I think “3500 years of existence” is unnecessary and actually untrue! Maybe “3500 years of history as ostensibly recorded and retold by western historians” is more accurate. We are free not to accept dubious paleontological hypotheses. The vedas self-evidently show that “Hindus” have existed for far longer on earth. Why not believe them as modern Hindus, or even give them the benefit of doubt? Why view eveything through the lens of the tyrannical dogmas of Science, that faithful extension of protestant Lutheran Chistianity?

Until 1990 there was no presence of Indian Military in Kashmirs tows and roads. The Army came out to stop militant subversive activities by certain pockets of Kashmiri Muslims. In particular started and perpetrated by Jehadi Terrorists.

The author is clearly neglecting some very obvious facts. Saying that India never conquered any land outside India is completely incorrect. The Guptas invaded lands in South Asia. Similarly, the Chola dynasty invaded parts of Sri Lanka, Maldives, and other South Asian islands.
Another fact that has been ignored is about the invasions of Timur. Yes, he invaded India killed a number of Hindus. But, he also killed a huge number of Muslims. One of the main reason for the Islamic Delhi Sultanate to decline are the invasions of Timur.
And giving a suggestion to compile the statistics of how many Hindus and Muslims were killed in 1947 is a highly immature statement.
What Shinde and other Congress leader, whether true or not, is debatable. But, that’s not the real issue. It’s very obvious that regarding the situation that was a highly irresponsible comment. The only reason for saying this at this juncture is to gather more and more Muslim votes. However, in order to support BJP and coming up with such irresponsible statements like compiling statistics of whether more Muslims or more Hindus were killed during the independence is in itself highly irresponsible.
You may have your own perspective about the violent acts that you have mentioned as “spontaneous revolution” and “uncontrolled fury”, that’s your call. But, the least that can be expected from someone who writes on such an issue is that report facts that are correct and not give flammable statements. I understand your sentiments for the BJP, but that doesn’t mean that you make factual errors to support your stance.
In the end I’ll say that all political parties are the same be it BJP or Congress. There’s not much of a difference between them.
Instead of getting into who killed who and which religion is more into violence its better to let all Indians (Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains) be together and stand united against the acts of neighboring countries such as Pakistan.

Good write up and analysis of Hindus. I was once an ardent believer of the concept that a political party formed based on a religious support should not be supported. But today I find we have only two types of parties in India. One directly or indirectly stating that they want to take to the support of people of particular religion. A brilliant article , I think the author touches upon the totally misunderstood fact that of the difference between religion and culture . Famous intellect in Pakistan , Hasan Nisar has spoken about this misunderstanding in his videos. We have a long standing culture many aspects of this may have come certainly from Hinduism simply because of the ages and ages its been around . That culture allowed us to adopt different faiths as and when it came up and was an individuals decision . That does not mean you forget your Indian culture or allow the culture to be changed due to religion .

Hindus and their ancestors were never converted, forced to believe in it, or accepted it as a dogma. Hinduism is a philosophy, embeded in diverse rituals all across the world. It is upto an individual to embrace this philosophy and find a meaning of life through its embeded principles of non violence, acceptance, and respect for the learned and elederly. For Hindus to keep this kindle alive, they must uplift women and bring more fairness and equality in the social lives.

A well written article, yes. but somehow, it reminded me of when I used to be 13-14 and say anything that came to my mind! Being a journalist, a more responsible response would have been expected from the author. No doubt Hindus have suffered due to very many reasons, but that does not lessen the pain suffered by other communities neither does it justify the “spontaneous revolution”.
As for talking about peace, calm & acceptability among the common man, it’s the same with every country & religion. Common man is mostly a victim rather than a perpetuator of unacceptable ideologies or actions.
All in all, Mr Gautier could have been written more responsibly about the religion he’s come to love over the years

A fact reiterating views of Bal Thackeray who always said there were harmful non-Indian people in Mumbai. There was no other reason for riots to take place far away from Ayodhya.

It is a romantic article, ignoring the reality. Hindus are involved in widesprad crime and corruption in this great country. No one said that all hindus are terrorists. But there have been incidents of bomb blasts done by hindu right wing extremists, one cannot wish them away and call all hindus peace-loving. The truth is so piercing that it hurts. Thank you. As a hindu I always wonder why even if we want to be hateful and spiteful not one of our leaders can speak like the way Akbaruddin owaisi spoke.Other religions have a tried and tested diction and vocubulary of hate for the ‘others’ whereas we hindus cannot put one sentence together. Even when we want to sabre rattle like recently when one of our soldiers head was cutoff the worst threat we can come with is “If you do it next time there will be consequences”. Your title was so ironic, for a moment, I couldn’t believe it. Those terms put together, don’t sound “made for each other” at all. Being a Hindu, I am bound to be biased about the religion. The basis of Hindu religion IS it’s hospitality, however, “if someone slaps you on one cheek, present them with your other cheek”, this attitude simply is not working today. Hence, the drastic measures.

I see no value or meat in your article. I don’t event understand what is the point that you are trying to highlight. For a layman – living a normal life itself is a challenge. Its the madness of “POWER” by countries / politician / people propagating as religious gurus / heads who in order to ensure that they stay in POWER – results in killing – the end results. I say this because the act of “Killing” triggers many reaction and counter reaction and people like you make it a history reference. Its such a lame article. when you started with Hindu ethos and Hinduism I thought you would make some sense and not get in to some one sided hidden agenda(evident int he last few paragraph)..I am a christian with some amount of Hinduism in my lifestyle. Pity on us indians….fighting in the name of religion….Religion is something meant to bring people together not to take them apart…I was reading some of these comments by mostly indians (leave Francois,he is a foreigner he can never understand our culture properly) and I was for a moment ashamed to be from a so called secular country India. Babri Masjid was illegally constructed by the foreigner Babur upon a medieval Ram Temple built during the glorious Rajput Period. Hindu P.M. Rajib ji did a good thing by starting Shilanyas there. Regarding Somnath Temple, Indian Bismark (man of blood and iron) Sardar Patel ji also did a good thing by rebuilding it, which was also destroyed by the Mlechh Mahmud a thousand years ago when North India was still under the Rajput Period .And for your kind information Indu darling, the Great Mosque at Cordoba was built upon a Christian Church when the Muslim arabs conquered Spain in the early medieval period but it was again re-christened when queen Issabella and her husband reconquered Spain for the Christians of europe.And the Hagia Sophia at istanbul was turned into a mosque when the Ottoman Empire overthrew the last Byzantine Emperor. But the secular Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk again turned it into a Museum instead, very intelligent and a farsighted statesman who knew very well that these create disputes which india is still suffering because of Babri Masjid.

Instead Buddhism reclaimed old Hindu countries of South East Asia. Thanks you very much for your unbiased views. I’ve always felt that Hinduism is a way of life & it accepts every other religion’s presence in this world & by and large is also open to criticism… You have echoed the sentiments which many of us have been expressing in closed door discussions. It hurts a lot when you see the Kashmiri Pandits driven out of their homes(as a part of ethnic cleansing) & no political party is interested in their plight
You are right, Dr Prasanna. Hindus from a young age are taught to be non violent by word, thought and action. I believe Islam preaches ‘An eye for an eye’ and a man can hit a woman if she does not live according to his ways and muslims can take revenge up to the degree they think appropriate. This whole thing about anti Hindus is about trying to get establish the supremacy of Islam. We are not against muslims as fellow human beings. Infact muslims in India should start accepting Hinduism and adopt Hinduism as a way of their lives too.

Yadwinder, you must try to empathise with the Hindus. The whole agenda of the muslims is to convert people forcefully, bring down temples and take over. This is the only country where Hindus can call Hindustan. One can see the viciousness of what is happening with the ISIS rule. I wonder if this is what it says in the Quaran. Muslim rulers chopped off hands, decapitated Hindu Brahmins, raped women and forced girls to a marry muslim men(as is happening in Pakistan). Would you rather live in that kind of country? believe we were older than 3500 yrs, Old Dwarka which is underneath water in Gujarat state, dates back to 10000 yrs ago. And people living near the Sindhu Valley, Arab people did not pronounce S word instead they would silent the S, so got the name Hindu people.
